Most of Shih-Chieh Jeng’s early cases were commercial space design. When light industrial style became famous abroad, riding on the trend, Jeng put a lot of light industrial elements in his works, creating an atmosphere distinct from the conventional industrial style, which usually conveys a sense of coldness and toughness. Now, to explore more possibilities, he would like to seek inspiration from residential space and hotel restaurant design.
“When a style is overused, I seek for alternative solution,” Jeng said.
Oyster Bar by Fujin tree hides itself in the alleys of Dunhua North Road in Songshan District. A huge bank of French windows, a white neon bar sign saying “Oyster Bar” and the back of a dark green sofa form a harmonious view to greet its visitors. Inside the entrance, on the left side is a dark brown shelf propped up by a brass shelf frame, which also serves as a screen that divides the dining area. On the right, visitors could find soft and simple designs both in the dining table bases consist of x-shaped foot and cone-shaped leg, and in the classic European-style dining chairs. The delicate details add to the modernity of the dining area, meanwhile highlighting the strength and beauty of the structure in the context of classic design.
In the dining area, the gray floor of cement mortar has a mellow glow. Looking up, one could see gray capitals of the columns supporting the gray ceiling, recalling the flying buttress in Gothic architecture. Together, this cellar-like space assures its visitors of a place where they could relax at ease. On the left side, an L-shaped teak bar counter provides two drinking areas. The curves in the design give the counter a look totally different from the traditional bulky counters. Above the countertop, the graceful hanging glass racks are made of brass, which echo the brass-framed shelf in the entrance, achieving consistency in integral design. Yet on the other hand, the contrast between the cement mortar floor in the dining area and the oak floor in the bar area produces a playful visual effect. It is also worth noticing that the thin window set on the side not only allows natural light to stream in in the daytime but offers chances for passersby to have a glance inside.
Through the translucent glass placed between the kitchen and the counter, people could faintly engage in the chef’s culinary art while at the same time enjoy their own space. An antique wall light on the side further adds to the elegance of the bar. Fitting comfortably into the background of natural color floor and the gray column aside, the white marble oyster showcase and the light-brown champagne cabinet have a sleek and dainty look. Even though they just take up one small corner in the whole bar, Jeng still carefully arranged all these different materials and colors to present a picture delightful to the eye. Bathroom design is another piece of ingenuity. The smoothness of the mirror stands in sharp contrast to the unevenness of the cement wall. The dividers with rounded corner, the cylinder Dupont lavatory sink, the silver hairline cylinder trash bin and the oval dressing mirror all provide a feminine touch for the area.
Walls in Oyster Bar are painted light yellow so there is a warm and cozy feel to the whole space. Among them, one particular wall has a beautiful painting sitting at the center. The painting is the work of You, an experienced painter, whose family used to own a paint store. After graduating from arts school, You wanted to try something new so he set up his own painting studio. He is especially good at breathing new life into interior spaces of all kinds through various hues created out of imported paints. The masterpiece in the Oyster Bar serves as a good example. With splashes of white and champagne gold running across the deep blue background, the artwork vividly conveys the images of tangled seaweed, foaming bubbles and golden sunshine under the sea. Below it, Jeng cleverly placed a sideboard as a perfect foil for this artwork. The shape of it would bring the viewer’s attention to the painting, which reminds these visitors to the Oyster Bar of an oyster farm.
Unlike the nature-oriented design in Fujin Tree 355, which is abundant in lush greenery, the design for the space outside the Oyster Bar by Fujin tree is bright and simple. Here, Jeng wittily blurs the boundary between the indoor dining area, the outdoor space and the street view. Just like the philosophy of this 106.5 m2 bar, that is, bringing out the best of food for its diners, the interior design also brings out the best of this space. Shih-Chieh Jeng, like a talented sculptor, always spares no effort to make all his cases exquisite artworks that each presents unique aesthetics and thus excites people’s imagination in life.
