The playful lights and shadows. Unlike the lapping lights of sun preferred by the west world, It's the beauty composed by layers of shades and desaturated, gloomy colors. As the noted Japanese writer, Tanizaki Junichiro once said, "Beauty does not exist in the objects but the shadows between the objects." Interior designer, Jeng shihchieh specializes in using all kinds of grey colors and detailed arrangements to direct the light into the space hence create various layers of shadows. He grasps the essence of ink washing painting of using the single color of ink to depict the aesthetics of spaces.
This project locates in one of the residential areas in Taipei which used to be an 80m2 thirty-year-old house. The main sources of light are the front windows, back balcony, and two small windows on the aisle. The traditional compartment blocked the nature light from the house, narrowing the sight, therefore make this house feel smaller. As the practitioner in art industry, the new owner are fond of the arrangement of lights and shadows, desaturated colors, as well as mixed materials in Jeng's work of FujinTree355 and FujinTree 353. Therefore, he commissioned Jeng to design this place. Jeng realized the residents are a couple who work long hours and wish to be fully relaxed after coming home. Hence, he re-arranged the interior setup and expanded the sizes of windows to produce a cozy atmosphere. He also use the light reflecting and transparent features of glasses, metals, and stones to direct the nature light from outside at most. The filtering glass blocks and Roman blinds preserve the sense of privacy as well as demonstrate the warming halo. Furthermore, the old compartments are eliminated by separating the main aisle and relaxing areas with wooden and cement materials hence the open-spaced design outside of main bedroom and bathroom enlarges the sense of space while the functions of each area maintain well organized.
By entering the place, first you will see the living room and a graceful, masculine-fashioned ammonium shelf serves as introduction chapter of the story in this space. It’s also a platform to demonstrate the taste and sense of aesthetics of the owner. The neat shelf lining ends up with rounded wooden barks which brings out the elegancy of this design. The rectangle ash locker underneath serves as the center of this living room. The hollow design of drawers gives out more visual space and the hollow parts create unlimited imaginations as the shadow under the setting sun. Nonetheless, the dark-colored wooden floor is deliberately arranged as the image of railroad tracks to distinct from the light-colored floor in the kitchen. The wooden floor also produces the warming and lovable character of this place. The large window is carefully framed with sliver Italian glass blocks with only 5mm gaps on both sides. Its transparency and even-numbered symmetry design preserve the spirit of dignity of this space.
The kitchen and dining room are right behind the living room. Metal counter and black jade marble table are linked to each other, creating a subtle light stream which projecting the story of the surrounding. The metal table legs are designed in round and triangle shapes to echo with the surface of table geometrically. In addition, two windows opened on one side extend this geometric idea and prolong the visual sense of windows. This sunken space on the wall reflects the light from outside to the kitchen. The lights and shadows display another view of the space when lowering the white Roman blind. The dimed light from the gaps of walls and windows make people want to stay longer in this room.
On the other side of the kitchen is a multi-functional space parted with glasses. The light can penetrates into the room completely and can be used as painting or work out room in the afternoon. During the night, the rounded curtain deflects or block the light and make this room feels like a magic theater where can be used as the booth for chilling. The play of music will enhance this delight of life. This room can also be used as a private guestroom when the curtain is down. What worth to mention is the designer has created a delicate wooden ware at the connecting part of glasses which serves as the shoebox on the outside while it's also the headboard for guestroom bed on the other side.
In the main bedroom, designer utilized the strength of the original space, keeping the large window to allow the light to enter from the balcony and use the snake curtain meanders the light. The dome designed ceiling enlarge the space while forms two curves to opposite direction with the channel of curtain. The hidden lighting can be vaguely seen from outside during the night. In order to create the comforting feel, the bedroom used great amount of wooden materials instead of metal and cement. The headboard and bedframe is made with dyed dark steel brush sycamore while the floor is light-grey birch so that the color can be livelier. The bed board collage display the beauty of linings with varied wooden materials. The main bathroom is composed with faux finish and Ariston marble mosaic to showcase various layers of grey and white as well as the integration of all distinct materials. In addition to the opened-window design, two narrow mirrors are placed on the wall to create the refracting effect and include the green from the outside to this living space. The designer built in a forsted glass between the main bathroom and guest bathroom so that the light from outside can shine into the guest bathroom through this channel. It feels like an impressionist work by Monnet that display the beauty of life in the changing natural light.
